It's OK To Be Gay

On August 22, LA Times reported about Mitt Romney directing his campaign in order to bend the Republican party's idea that there should be no homosexuals serving in the army. During the 2008 elections the Republican party commented on this subject; “the incompatibility of homosexuality with military service” was mentioned, which was also followed by; “protect our servicemen and women” and “the benefits of traditional military culture.” If this comment made me mad, I wonder how infuriated actual homosexuals were. The republicans mentioned our servicemen and women by stating that they are in "danger" from homosexuals, as if homosexuality is a disease that threatens others. It is actually quite funny how our government refuses the help of homosexuals in the army, but are dying to draft other people. Homosexuals are NOT a different species. They are human too, just like the rest of us. If the government needs those volunteers to serve in the army then why refuse the help of certain people just because of the gender they are attracted to? This year, the Republican party did not comment on homosexuality yet, thanks to Romney. They also did not mention the fact that Obama had dropped the "don't ask don't tell" policy. This policy stated that the gays that were serving in the army should not talk about or ever mention that they were gay. That is like telling a person to not mention their own ethnicity. They try to shove down and hide the fact that there are people who are gay, but things are slowly changing. Who knows? Maybe gay marriage will be accepted all over America. Or maybe all over the world.

  1. Ani, I agree with you completely. Homosexual men should have just as much rights as others in army. They are humans too and we are created equally, just like hows it is written in the Declaration of Independence. Equality is a right given when your born and it should not be taken away because you are attracted to another gender.

  4. I completely agree with most of your ideas, that they should allow homosexuals to join the military. First, because they are willing to die for their country, and second, because that should not be a factor for them being able to join. They do not have flesh eating viruses, that is just their lifestyle, and how they are. The one thing I do not think will ever happen, is gay marriage being accepted all over America, let alone the whole world; because it is strongly frowned upon in most parts of the world.

  5. I totally agree with your opinion Ani, It surprised me how this topic is until this day a controversial one. The government should allow anyone to join the military, regardless of their sexual orientation. America is a place of equality and freedom. Therefore, the government needs to be more cautious about making sure they do not implement hypocritical policies. Hopefully, in the near future, men and women will be looked upon as equals heedless of their race, sexual orientation, or sex.

  6. I believe that the reason this issue was ever brought up and thrown up in the air for debate is because homosexuality is just not accepted throughout most of the world. People have yet to come to their senses and understand that homosexuality is a growing trend in the world. Why many politicians continuously address this issue, is because they do not feel comfortable with the idea that a homosexual person will be given the responsibility of protecting our nation. Homosexuals might have a soft, sensitive spot, being around men constantly, and that is why politicians instinctively would not trust them in the army. However, I am totally for the idea that homosexuals should serve in the army because ultimately they are doing what the rest of us are reluctant to do, and that is risk their own life for the safety of our country.

  7. Ani, I agree with your arguement in your post. Homosexuals, as you stated, are people just like us. We are living in a country based on freedom. Homosexuals like the blacks had, and are still being discriminated and looked upawn as a discrase, but they are still citizens and therefore proud Americans just like us. If they are willing to fight, why not let them.

  8. Ani, I agree with your opinion. It is very nerve wrecking that homosexuality is such an issue till this day. Everyone is equal, no matter what kind of sexual orientation they hold. There is no such rule that only "straight" men can join the army. Homosexuals are not any different, and being sexually attracted to the same sex does not affect the army.

  9. Homosexuality is a very controversial topic, especially when it is mixed with political views. I agree with your opinion about homosexuals serving in the army. If they are ready to risk their lives to protect our country, as any other non homosexual citizen would do, what authority do we have to deny them that right? It is saddening that society constantly degrades them, especially to the point where if politicians become biased on the homosexuality topic, they can easily gain or lose votes. They should have the freedom of expressing themselves and having faith in what they believe, without the constant threat of judgement from society.

  10. it is kind of any person, whether homosexual or heterosexual, who makes the wish to serve in the army. Society tends to judge people by looking at their external features. Here is a perfect example of people who are misjudged, but in reality who have a kind heart to do something that most people will not do. Wishing to serve in the army is a choice of the individual, and the U.S. should feel lucky that it has people wishing to provide protection. Every person is created equal and deserves equal rights as well.

  11. The freedom to serve in the army of the United States, should apply to all people, who qualify. If a homosexual is willing to fight for their country, the government should not stand against them. Although I am against homosexuality, I still believe that we are equal and that the privileges of this country should not apply to a certain type of human. We are all one, united as a nation and as a species. Therefore, I agree with your statement and I am irritated by the rules that America has set against homosexuals serving in the U.S. army.

  12. Ani, I agree with your opinion on homosexuals. They are people too, therefore they should be treated equally. They are not doing anything wrong by being in the army, but helping us more. Why make a big deal out of something that is not harming anyone?

  13. I also agree with your opinion. Honestly, homosexuals should not be judged; no one should be. For being who they are, does not mean they should not be eligible to be a part of the army. That man/woman may be the strongest soldier in the army, but because of being who they are, they cannot fight for their country. That may be one of the most unfair ideas that I have heard of.

  14. Ani - this is a very sensitive topic that seems to keep appearing in the media because it is controversial. This topic causes people to argue about what they truly believe in. Since we have been studying "The Declaration of Independence" this past week, I feel that this article is even more relevant. This country was created and founded on the ideal that "all men are created equal", yet we seem to keep having problems with defining who is actually part of the side labeled "equal".
